Interact Club: Making Waves

Club Officers, Emilia Petrillo Danessa (11), Jenna Olson (11), Sofia Dicampli (11), Macy Martin (11), and Peyton Young (11) celebrate the aquatic theme at Pitch Night.

Interact Club is a community service-based club sponsored by Ms. Cheryl Beach. Meetings are held every 2nd Monday of the month from 3-4pm afterschool in Room 811.

It is 1 of 8 National Clubs by Rotary International, one of the largest community service organizations in the world. The club provides service hour opportunities and officer positions to students. “This club is an excellent way for students to branch out and experience things they don’t normally get to be part of. I believe that exposure to other elements outside of school helps kids find their passion.” Ms. Beach explains.

Last year the club participated in an activity called “Pedaling Towards Prosperity” where the club donated lightly used bikes to needy students in countries like Malawi, Venezuela, and Columbia who do not have a way to school. Bikes were given by local companies, or owners of unwanted used bikes. Students were then tasked with making any necessary repairs to the bikes. Ms. Beach expands on the activity, “…I admire the confidence and the student’s eagerness to be part of something like this. They are all very mature in their thinking and willingness to go out of their way to help others.” Ms. Beach expands on the activity.

Rotary International recently hosted a pitch night where representatives of the company and the different club branches pitch their ideas for a service project in hopes of earning the $1,000 prize to carry out the project. Rotary Club of Fort Lauderdale

Every year the club awards students who show great leadership skills with the RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award.) The award includes a 3-day trip to the Florida Keys and a workshopping experience.
