Elijah Wellington: From Brooklyn to Broadway

The talented and humorous Elijah Wellington (12) lives quite a double life. During the day he is a hardworking senior here at Fort Lauderdale High School, and at night he lives out his passion for musical theater. “I love acting because it brings me joy to make choices so vastly different from my personality and lean into these different people” Elijah continues, “As well as singing even though I can’t sing, but who doesn’t love to anyway.”

Elijah was born in Brooklyn, New York so he was constantly surrounded by Broadway shows and music. He’s always been a social person who grew up in a loud, big family so it was important for him to find his voice. Elijah explains “I live with my aunt, her three kids, my little brother, my aunt’s boyfriend, and his cousin. There is always something going on in my house and a million different personalities. I wanted to stand out and have my own spark.”

Elijah moved to Florida at eight years old and has made many friends at Fort Lauderdale High who have not only been a good support system for him but have brought him out of his comfort zone. “I found I had emotional support here and I wanted to pick the best of the best for academics, and I stand on that thought. The atmosphere, the opportunities it presents, and the number of tools at disposal here is quite amazing. The friends I have made here are starting to feel like family to me.”

Many people describe his personality as being funny, kind, loud, extroverted, and quite the character. One of his good friends David Brown (12) said “He is one of my good friends who also attends Fort Lauderdale High said he is always dancing or singing. It is like he can’t stop. I have never met someone with so much energy. He is also always making everyone around him laugh.”

Business and Marketing teacher Dr. Angela Morrison praises Elijah’s personality as well as his strong work ethic.

“Elijah is a model student. He has a bright future ahead and is clearly poised for success,” she said. “ He exhibits leadership traits and always adds a level of style and sophistication to any situation. He can switch to a British accent in a single breath or orator a riveting monologue or business presentation. His talents are endless, and his charm and wit are contagious.”

Elijah’s future looks big and bright. By focusing on both academics and extracurriculars, he has unlimited opportunities ahead.  He is allowing himself to begin the college experience before deciding which career path captures his attention. “I am very undecided. I’m not passionate about a ton of things however, I still want to make my mark on the world and do what I love to do. Right now, I’m focused on graduation and finding a good college. Maybe once I’m settled, I’ll find which passion of mine to make my career.”

Fort Lauderdale High is very proud to say that Elijah Wellington is a student here!
