Astonishing and versatile student Mary Sophie Huguet (12), participates in a wide range of extracurriculars and social activities, while also juggling the difficulties of being a senior.
“I am a life scout in the Boy Scouts of America and I am a rescue scuba diver,” said Sophie. “I am also working on my private pilot [license], and I often ride horses and drive boats. I also participate in Model United Nations and NJROTC.”
Sophie became a rescue scuba diver after she found a sense of comfort in being underwater, and wanting a career that could help people. When in the process of becoming a rescue diver she also obtained her CPR certification.
“[. . .] my dad put me in a camp to learn how to scuba dive, and I didn’t realize how much I would like it; staying underwater for an extended amount of time gave me a sense of peace,” she said. “I also learned that it could give me career opportunities that would allow me to help people.”
Being a rescue scuba diver, Sophie can handle problems both on and in the water.
“If something were to go wrong on a dive boat I would have the knowledge to remedy that situation,” she said. “If someone’s ability to move was rendered, I would be able to pull them out of the water, and help save their life.”
For her love of the ocean, she joined Troop 33 of the Boy Scouts of America.
“So my troop is a nautical troop, and all of our activities are done around the water. [. . .]I was able to go snorkeling, and diving with like-minded peers,” she said “growing up, the majority of my family vacations were to places like the Bahamas, and that is where I became infatuated with the ocean, and more specifically ocean animals.”
Looking for a way to spend time after school, and taking an interest in political affairs she decided to join Model United Nations.
“I’ve always found political affairs interesting, and[. . .]the old club sponsor was one of my favorite teachers,” she said, “and I had friends in the club so I thought it would be a good way to be social outside of class time.”
Sophie came to Fort Lauderdale High School finding it to be a cut above the rest.
“[. . .]at the time I knew a bunch of people who went here, and I got really good reviews,” she shared. “[. . .]out of all the schools in Broward County, this school was the most organized, and I thought it was going to help me more in the long run.”
Looking to meet nice people, and for a place to develop herself as a person, she joined the NJROTC program.
“[. . .]I met this wonderful person named Gracie Hudson who had a staff position at the time, and this class was the only class I felt comfortable in because It was a pretty hard time in my life,” she said. “I wasn’t expecting to come back in my junior year, but to be honest, I missed being in an environment where I felt comfortable and had something to motivate me.”
Finding classic careers not very interesting or a right fit, Sophie carries her adventurous spirit into a career, after high school.
“I want to go to college and study aviation science to hopefully be a stunt pilot or naval aviator. I’ve always been fond of obscure careers,” she said. “I never wanted to be something normal like a doctor or a lawyer[. . .], I realized that being a pilot would be a good career choice that I could excel in.”
Fort Lauderdale High School is proud to have Mary Sophie Huguet (12) as one of our students.
