AP Environmental Digs Into Learning

Violet Roberts (12), Lily O’Neil (12), Dara Sedaka (12), and Zane Knapp (12) collected soil to plant their seeds in.

On September 22, Fort Lauderdale High School’s AP Environmental Science students engaged in a hands-on lesson planting and germinating seeds which they will be able to watch grow over the next few weeks.

The classes planted a variety of seeds such as bean sprouts, radish, dill, and beet. The seeds will be taken care of and observed by the students throughout the semester.

Skills and information the students learn in AP Environmental deepen their understanding of ecological concepts and teach them practical skills they may use outside of class

“Knowing the environment is really important for sustainability. You should know how you affect your environment and how to help it,” said Ayden Marshall (12).

This is not the first hands-on activity the students have done since the school year started. FLHS’s AP Environmental teacher Ms. Bermudez often assigns her class activities that allow them to physically experience the topics they are discussing in class.

“My favorite part of this class was when we made terrariums out of Mason jars. We created our own ecosystem in a jar out of soil, sawdust, rocks, and cute little plants we found outside,” shared Kayla Duhaney (12).

These students are sowing the seeds of a more sustainable future that they will carry after them long after leaving the classroom.
