Welcome back to another edition of This Week in Sports! A lot has happened since last week, so let’s dive straight into this week’s exclusive coverage, provided by none other than The Navigator. Enjoy the latest edition of our weekly sports roundup!
VARSITY FOOTBALL:
On Thursday, the Flying L football team went into their fourth game of the 2023-24 campaign against Cypress Bay High School. If you remember from last season’s matchup, Fort Lauderdale came back in an overtime thriller on senior night to take the win in the last meeting. This time around however, it did not go the Flying L’s way. They lost 6-20 away at Weston; which leaves the team record at 2-2 (1-2 division record), and a large elephant in the room with a two game losing streak.
Unfortunately The Navigator was not able to get any comments this week regarding the Cypress Bay game, we apologize for this weeks’ lack of in-depth coverage.
GIRLS VARSITY VOLLEYBALL:
Last week was a good week for Girls varsity volleyball as they finished it with an overall record of 2-1; Winning games against Coral Glades High School 3-0 on Monday, Pompano Beach High School 3-1 on Tuesday, and losing their final game of the week against Stoneman Douglas High School 0-3. Their overall record improves to 5-5 as they have yet another week ahead of them.
GIRLS JUNIOR VARSITY VOLLEYBALL:
On the JV side of things, the girls went 0-3 last week. Losing games to Coral Glades 2-0, Pompano Beach 2-1, and finishing up their week with another loss to Stoneman Douglas 2-0. A tough week for the JV squad as their record worsens to 2-7. We wish both teams good luck on their continuing campaign!
SWIMMING:
The Flying L swim team had their first meet on Wednesday, September 6, facing off against Coral Springs Charter School and McArthur High School in a total of 24 events featuring both boys and girls squads. FLHS won several events and beat both visiting teams with the combined final score of 254.00 to McArthur’s 12.00, and 190.00 points to Coral Springs’ 156.00.
The boys first 200 yard medley relay was a narrow win against Coral Springs Charter, as the squad of John Silva (12), Daniel Ella (9), Renato Corrales (10), and Francisco Corrales (9) won by a margin of 1.30 seconds and pulled out the tough win. John Silva gave his team credit.
“Our coach strategically chose the best candidates for that race, and we all put our best into it,” he said.
Silva is also the only senior swimmer on the team and has aspirations for the underclassmen.
“There are a lot of juniors this year, but the sophomore class that is swimming this year are all club swimmers. I see them as seniors going to states [championship],” he commented.
As of the publishing of this article, the team would have already met again on Wednesday, September 20. They face West Broward High School and McArthur High School. Coverage for that meet will be posted next week! The meet following will occur at home on September 27. All the luck to our Flying L swimmers!
