James Boardman: Diving into Greatness

Having a passion for the ocean and its life, Fort Lauderdale High School junior James Boardman gets involved in activities that surround him with water.

“What interests me are things that revolve around the ocean or a pool. I love the ocean and all the animals within it, every fish, every mammal is like a blessing to me,” he said. “I enjoy free diving, fishing, spearfishing, and doing the sport I love, which is diving [springboard and platform].”

Being a nine-time national champion, a two-time state champion, and the Canadian Cup champion, James has made a name for himself in the diving community as an exceptional diver. His proudest moment will be winning the World Aquatics High Diving World Cup 2024 in Brasilia, Brazil and making his family proud.

“I would say my biggest achievement is making my family proud of who I am and the athlete I [have] become,” he said. “When I win the World Aquatics High Diving World Cup in October, the feeling of my family cheering me on will become my greatest achievement.”

James was destined to follow in his father’s footsteps and become an extraordinary diver.

“[. . .] My father was a diver for the University of Tennessee. He competed in the 1984 Olympic trials, so when I was born I was immediately put into diving and grew up with the sport.”

Taking inspiration from his father, and his teachers, James seeks to develop skills that will help in the future.

“Well it’s been eye opening and full of life lessons [. . .] from my father inspiring me everyday to keep trucking and keep going, my teachers teaching me a good management schedule,” said James, “to Chief Tyson and Lieutenant Commander Coyle teaching me how to be a leader.”

James’ motivation to continue to be an excellent diver and a good person helps guide him through life. And, although he stands only approximately 5’6”, he is not afraid to dream big.

“I’m the little kid with a big heart and big personality which carries me,” he said.
