For years, teenagers have felt pressure to have a date for Valentine’s Day. As time has passed, traditions have changed and a new event has formed: Galentine’s Day.
Galentine’s Day is a day for the gals, for a group of girls to dress up and do Valentine’s Day themed activities. Some popular events include baking, movie watching, or painting. Regardless of what is planned, it is always a fun-filled time.
This event was created in an episode of Parks and Recreation to have a day dedicated to celebrate with female friends. It was set to be February 13th, and meant to spend a day away from boyfriends, fiancés, and husbands.
Since then, it has soared in popularity. From celebrities to high school students, plenty of women participate in Galentine’s Day. A few years ago, Kylie Jenner hosted a painting party with her favorite female friends. As for high school students, it is a popular event for those without a significant other. Plenty of friend groups plan a festive day together to showcase their love and support for one another.
Macy Martin (11) loves spending time with her friends; she always sees Galentine’s Day as an extra special day with them. ‘
“Everyone came over to my house, and we each brought our own desserts which were Valentine’s Day inspired. We put together a charcuterie board with everything,” she explained. “We all got dressed up in fancy dresses and made a collaborative playlist of all our favorite love songs/girly songs and had that on shuffle throughout the gathering.”
Some groups choose a more simple approach to the day, choosing to go out to a restaurant for lunch or dinner.
Each year, Jenna Olson (11) looks forward to the day spent with friends. No matter what she has planned, Olson always has a great time.
“My girlfriends and I always go to a Galentine’s Day dinner, where we get dressed up and look cute,” said Olson. “It’s just the perfect chance for my friends and I to catch up.”
