This Week in Sports: (Week of 10/13-10/19)

It’s finally cooling down in Florida, but heating up when it comes to sports; Hello and welcome to a brand new edition of This Week in Sports! Sports like Girls’ JV and Varsity volleyball have wrapped up and are now in the books. Let’s take a look at the action that went on last week!

VARSITY FOOTBALL:

QB Jayden Chico (10), WR Jaboree Riggins (10), LB Remington Roberts (12), and RB Bre’Lan Mareus (11)

The Fort Lauderdale High School varsity football team went head-to-head with national powerhouse Saint Thomas Aquinas on Friday and was blown out due to how formidable of a team they have assembled.

Despite this, the Flying L’s were still able just to kick back and have a fun night of football knowing their fate was already sealed, and they didn’t disappoint either!

Three players had notable nights against Saint Thomas: Cornerback/Safety Elijah Bernard-Blue (12); Running Back/Linebacker Bre’Lan Mareus (11); and Reciever Jaborree Riggins (10).

Blue had an outstanding night historically for the team, recording a team record of 13 tackles in a singular game against one of the top teams in the nation. On behalf of the FLHS Morning Show, Eric Tovin got an interview with him, the clip is provided below.

“[My performance] was alright, just glad our team didn’t give up and we kept fighting. [Saint Thomas] over there played a good game, and we’ll try to get them next year.”

Moving to offense, Bre’Lan also had himself quite the night; rushing for over 110 yards and giving the crowd a lot to cheer for throughout the game.

Jaboree Riggins almost had a touchdown, catching a dime thrown at him from about 10 yards. After review, however, his touchdown play was called back due to his foot making slight contact with the out-of-bounds line. While it was called back, this play sparked energy back into the team despite knowing their fate, as they played with grit, grind, and heart until the clock hit quadruple zeros.

Jaboree Riggins recalled Touchdown.

CROSS COUNTRY:

This past Thursday, the Flying L Cross Country team competed in the BCAA County Cross-Country Championship! With nearly 200 athletes from 30+ schools across Broward County, Fort Lauderdale High School finished 13th overall.

Carleigh Tripp placed 22nd with a new PR of 22:58, along with Layla Cruz placing 34th and recording a new PR of 24:02! A very excellent outing for our cross-country team, as they have shown their strength and resilience county-wide!
