On Friday, August 26, the Flying L football team faced off against the Deerfield Beach Bucks in the season opener at home. The team won in a convincing fashion, 23-15.
The defense had a dominating performance, locking up Deerfield’s offense and giving them little to no chances to score throughout the entire game. Much of the critical defense was played in the red zone, with the team keeping the offense at bay and getting the ball back on many turnovers on downs.
The initial mood that was set for the game was a struggle, with a first possession safety from the Bucks. However, the game quickly turned for the Flying L’s. Toward the end of the first quarter, linebacker King Williams (12) stole the ball with an impressive interception which helped get the L’s in a position to score. Fellow linebacker Omar Aristil (12) also had a pick six in the 4th quarter, sealing the game for Lauderdale.
Although, the offense also had quite the game. Receivers Keyveon Johnson (11), Ernest Joseph (12), and Travaughn Robbins-Hall (12) each having a touchdown. Johnson felt that the win was a complete group effort.
“We were all in. A lot of people didn’t believe in us, we kept putting ourselves in the picture and making it happen,” Johnson said. “The coaches and the team together, with our skills, put us in that state of mind.”
The game was an excellent outing from the Flying L’s, with promising offense and defense that look to shine for the games to come.
