A new rookie K-pop girl group, “Kep1er”, debuted their first mini-album, ‘First Impact’ on Jan. 3, 2022. The album consisted of 6 songs, with “Wa Da Da” serving as the album’s title track. Their debut was an instant hit.
Kep1er’s debut was highly anticipated among K-pop fans. The group was formed from the popular survival show “Girls planet 999” where 99 girls from Korea, Japan and China compete to debut. The show aired from Aug. 6, 2021 to Oct. 22, 2021. The final line up consists of the nine highest ranked girls from the show: Kim Chaehyun, Huening Bahiyyih, Choi Yujin, Kim Dayeon, Seo Youngeun, Kang Yeseo, Ezaki Hikaru, Sakamoto Mashiro, and Shen Xiaoting.
The anticipation for Kep1er was both national and global. The rookie group’s mini album had surpassed 150,000 sales before the album had even been released. On their first day, they managed to break the record for the best selling first-day debut record, outselling previous holder Aespa, a popular girl group.
Following that record-breaking day, they achieved the second-best-selling debut in the first week behind Aespa. They have also surpassed 30 million views on their “Wa Da Da” music video in under a week. The group has also already won awards for their debut, 3 first places on “M countdown”, A show that airs weekly that allows the top charting musicians of South Korea to perform and be voted on for awards.
Kep1er still has a long way to go. It is exciting to watch them flourish into the spotlight with their many successes, and it is expected that more will follow from the rising group in the future.
